Wall Street Journal Reporter Evan Gershkovich's Espionage Trial Moves Forward
Gershkovich Has Been Held in Moscow's Lefortovo Prison for 100 Days
Trial Date Yet to Be Announced
MOSCOW, July 18, 2024 (Updated 10:12 am) - The espionage trial of Evan Gershkovich, the imprisoned reporter for The Wall Street Journal, appears to be moving ahead. Gershkovich, who has been jailed in Moscow's notorious Lefortovo Prison awaiting trial on charges of espionage since April 28, appeared in court on June 26.
Gershkovich and his newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, have denied the charges, calling them "baseless" and "politically motivated." The journalist has been in captivity in Moscow for 100 days on espionage charges. His family and colleagues have expressed concern for his well-being and have called for his immediate release.
One year ago on Friday, Gershkovich's parents, Ella Milman and Mikhail Gershkovich, received a chilling phone call from the managing editor of The Wall Street Journal. They were told that their son had been arrested in Moscow and charged with espionage. Since then, the family has been living in limbo, waiting for news about their son's fate.
