The deadly earthquake that struck Turkey on Monday, which was also felt in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, was as strong as the one that occurred in 1939, one of the most powerful on record. On August 13, 1822, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Turkey, causing significant damage. The magnitude of the recent earthquake was 7.8, far more substantial than the 1822 event.
1939 Earthquake
The 1939 Erzincan earthquake, which occurred on December 27, 1939, is considered the deadliest earthquake in Turkey before 1920. It had a magnitude of 7.8 and caused widespread destruction in the eastern part of the country. The earthquake resulted in an estimated 32,700 deaths and left thousands injured.
